Our editor started performing in northern Michigan in 1999. He got to
know many area performers, club owners and club managers while
performing with or sitting/filling in with bands. As goes with the
territory, he would get calls from bands looking for musicians or club owners looking for bands to fill
canceled dates. He started compiling lists of musicians and bands in
spreadsheets to have the info handy when someone called with a need. He
then put the raw info into a database to learn more about database structure and
management for computer science classes that he was attending. As he was already playing with hypertext mark-up language
(HTML), combining his data with a web interface was something he would eventually need to do. The initial idea for
eXposureNorth.com stemmed from the data he had already been collecting.
In 2003 he launched the first web version of the site and quickly realized that he had bitten off more than he could
chew. For one thing the site was static and was not yet tied to a data base so all links were manual and there were tons
of pages needed to handle the content. The scope of what he was trying to do was also too large in that he tried covering
all forms of entertainment. Movies, books, fine dining, horoscopes, DJs and karaoke were listed right alongside live bands,
performers and musicians.
By 2005, he launched a second version of the web site with a focused
narrowed to live music and with the intent of
supporting live music in Northern Michigan. The new site had an improved look and feel, but was still too static. Logan then
started tying the site to a database and experimented with different programming languages to get the functionality that he
needed.
On the fourth version of the site in 2007, he registered eXposureNorth.com domain name and continued beta-testing. At the
same time, he continued building the database of bands/performers based or performing in northern Michigan as well as a
complete listing of venues that feature live music. Desiring to be more than just listing and links to bands based or
performing in northern Michigan, he set out to provide a place for bands without web sites to host themselves. Yes, sites like
MySpace and Facebook were already doing free web-based social networking for bands all over the world.
Our editor wanted something that focused on and supported northern Michigan
live music. With increased programming knowledge and learning from earlier attempts to
launch the site, he fashioned a web site with the mission of providing visitors:
- a complete/searchable database of past and present bands/performers either based in or performing in northern Michigan.
- a complete searchable database of northern Michigan venues that feature live entertainment as well as events that involve
live entertainment.
- an effective, easy, and useful collection of functionality and resources at a degree of interactivity that would make the
site invaluable to performers and fans of live entertainment.
Currently, eXposureNorth.com is in its fifth version and was launched with band and musician sections in January of 2110. Additional
sections will become active throughout the year until all sections and functions are completed. To our knowledge, eXposureNorth.com
is the most
comprehensive and interactive resource for Northern Michigan music on the net!
When all sections and functionality are completed, eXposureNorth.com
will be an e-zine with the data capacity of wikipedia and Internet Movie
Database and boast social networking features parallel on par with
YouTube, MySpace and Facebook focused and driven to support live music
in northern Michigan. If you seek to reach bands, musicians, prospective patrons or just music enthusiasts within our publishing area, eXposureNorth.com is your
